my labour day long wkend...
of rallies...
spent the past 3 evenings attending election rallies... attending rallies have brought me to places i've never been to or places which i have passed by but never really thought of going. in contrary to the rallies which i've been to as a kid which were mostly at open spaces in between blocks of flats where residents could look down from their flats, the rallies i've been to this yr are situated in much "secluded" area, the 1st a muddy field in the middle of an industrial estate, the 2nd, the infamous "white elephant" mrt stn which i've heard so much abt but nvr been to, the 3rd, an open field btw pte hsing and flats at an estate which i lived in in the past. if i were to follow all rallies, i wld probably be able to go to other parts in sg which i may not hv been b4 :P...
anyway going there weren't actually the problem. the major problem was dealing with the elements of nature.
day 1
planned to go down straight aft the work but the moment i stepped out of the office, it started pouring (eventually the lightning caused another rally to be cancelled but the others went ahead anyway)!!! didnt mind the rain but the worst part was the condition of the field which the rally was at, by the time the rally ended, both feet were covered with mud, nearly lost 1 slipper (luckily i changed in slippers which i had specially brought along, if not, there goes my new shoes :P), and my clothes were splattered with patches of mud (unfortunately due to my flip flops which splattered mud as high as my head...) in between the rally, had to worry abt bugs esp tiny flying cockroaches!!! saw there crawling all over the pple in front of me so had to keep swiping my back n head to double check whether there were any :P...
day 2
luckily no mud this time round but plenty of water and once again my feet were submerged in H2O...luckily, the venue was near an mrt stn so had some shelter and place to sit down occassionally..
day 3
though no rain, ground was still abit wet due to rain earlier on...but abit worried abt toilets coz was a huge open field so didnt dare to drink or eat too much ;p
went ard to check out wat the diff parties have to offer and to see how the new candidates actually were. am pretty impressed by some by slightly disappointed by some. could see how well prepared a certain party was and am pretty impressed by the results of their major "restructuring"... and if there is anyone who still commented that young pple didnt care abt the politics nowadays, they shd visit the rallies n see for themselves. moreover, i believe many were enjoying themselves as much i was by the humor some candidates possessed.
overall the atmosphere at the rallies felt like a big "carnival", there were actually ice cream sellers, pple selling snacks etc... pple from all over sg were there despite of their constituencies or even whether they had to vote at all. n despite the serious topics which were touched on, there were lighter moments, such as when an indian candidate spoke in tamil, all others couldnt understand but judging from the tones of his speech, there crowds cheered him on at times
when he sounded agitated or when his tone became harsh or serious. it would normally be followed by roars of laughter so everyone had fun. there would be a few more vocal audiences who would burst out one or comments which would cause an uproar of laughter across the crowd... am especially overwhelmed by the support the crowd showed when they were sending the candidates off at the 1st rallies, chanting the party name n pouring into the side road where their vehicle were and blocking up the roads. (think the incident led to more authorities being dispatched to the subsequent rallies)..
dun think i'm going to any tonight though it has been an interesting n memorable experience, it was also a tiring one, having to stand long hours and must give my "weather beatened" feat a well deserved rest...
of my upcoming KL trip...
yupz, confirmed that i'll be going kl afterall, went early to beach road with rachel to find out the prices as well as make bookings for our trip. got a pretty gd bargain in the end as the particular hotel which we chose wa having promo so each pd onli $131 for hotel n return bus fare for 3d2n... have started planning where to go but doubt i wld have time to visit my relatives at all.
